You know there is this guy I love to the moon and back! We have been married for 26 years and together for 29 years! I’d really like to make it at least 26 more! He really must love me, because he never complains when I say, I need to take your picture for a blog post, Instagram or Twitter.
This guy spends lots of time outdoors during the summer. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. He’s over 50 and that puts him at higher risk to develop skin cancer. No matter if he’s gardening, kayaking, mowing or just relaxing in the sun, I want him to be safe and protected.
In a 2012 survey by The Skin Cancer Foundation it was revealed that men over age 50 are more than twice as likely as women to develop skin cancer, yet only 51 percent of men in the U.S. admitted to using sunscreen in the past 12 months. Those are scary statistics. Cancer sucks, no matter what kind of Cancer it is, period!
Women we need to unite and make sure the men and any man we know and love don’t turn into one of those scary statistics! I came up with a few summer sun safety tips for men over 50 and even men under 50. Spread the word, cover up and don’t be a victim of skin cancer.
- Limit exposure to the sun between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. During this time the sun is at it’s hottest
- If you need to be out in the sun use a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF
- While outside, even if you have applied sunscreen, seek shade often.
- Keep it covered. Hats, sunglasses and UPF rated clothing can protect you when being exposed to the sun.
- When slathering on the sunscreen don’t forget about often missed areas. The feet, ears, back of neck and top of head need to be covered too.
- A base tan or dark skin will not protect you from the sun. Cover up!
- No matter how old or how young you are it’s never too late to start protecting your skin from the sun’s damaging rays.
