Is Your Mattress Affecting Your Health? Did you know that you will spend 1/3 of your life sleeping?  1/3 of your life may seem like a long time, but it’s time well spent.  Sleep is a vital part of your day. Your body needs sleep to be able to perform all of its biological functions. If you aren’t getting a sufficient amount of sleep, you aren’t being the best you can be.

If I don’t get enough sleep I am sluggish, have trouble concentrating and get down right moody and mean. As a focus more on leading a healthier lifestyle I know I need to make sleeping a top priority.

Sleep deprivation can negatively impact  your immune system. Research also suggests that sleep deprivation may lead to weight gain, high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, bone loss and even depression. YUK! If you are experiencing any of these health and wellness problems, you will want to make a guide for how to get better sleep a priority on your reading list.

Our mattress is over 5 years old. My husband and I have been waking up with back pain, stiffness and soreness and we were blaming it on old age. Now we realize our mattress is probably the real culprit. Does your mattress have lumps, sags or uneven spots like ours does? Do you wake up feeling stiff, sore or have back pain? If you can answer yes to any of these questions it’s definitely time for you to learn more about how to buy a mattress.

May is National Better Sleep Month the perfect time to up your sleeping game. With the Memorial Day Holiday coming up it wil be the perfect time to shop for new mattresses. I plan to take my time and do lots of research on mattress buying.

Finding a good store and a reliable sales associate will be the perfect place to start. I want to work with someone who knows the ins and outs of mattress buying. What materials should I be looking for? Size is important so that will factor in to our shopping, too.

Did you know that you should test drive a mattress before you buy it? It’s like a car, try it out and make sure it’s the right fit. Spend at least 15 minutes on top of the mattress. Put yourself in your usual sleeping position, relax and make sure the mattress is going to work for you and your partner.

The Better Sleep Council is sponsoring the Get on Top, win $1,000 giveaway. You have a chance to win a $1000 Visa Gift Card. You could really spruce up your bedroom and have a serene sleeping sanctuary with that prize.

Just 2 Sisters is having a $50 Visa Gift Card Giveaway! Easy entry. All you have to do is comment on this post about your sleep troubles and how a new mattress would help!

Our mattress is getting old and we definitely need a new one. My neck has been hurting lately. I want a softer one this time around!

  2. Amy Desrosiers says

A new mattress would help me to improve my sleep because I would not wake up with a stiff neck.

  3. Dawn Lopez says

I would love a new mattress, I love the idea of trying before you buy! Thanks so much for this awesome chance to win! Whoo hoo!

OMG a new mattress would probably be the best thing since sliced bread. I have not slept in our bed in years, too much back pain and soo un-comfy; the couch has been my bed for a long time and a new mattress would mean I could get a great night rest, without pain hopefully AND best of all, next to my hubby…

  5. Brett says

We need a mattress with a better structure. Ours is just not well made and while it’s firm enough it’s just not well made :(

  6. Shauna says

I totally think that my lack of sleep is affecting my health and my look. I have such huge bags under my eyes :( I am sure a new mattress would make a huge difference.

  7. Jennifer Soltys says

I have been waking up with a headache and sore neck lately. Not sure what’s happening, but a new mattress would be awesome!!

  8. says

I use to sleep very little at night. Toss and turn all night long. Felt like I never slept a wink when I got up in the mornings. We just got a new mattress and now I sleep like I’m on a cloud! It’s such a difference what having the right mattress can do!

  9. says

We just got a new mattress a few months ago. Trust me, it made all of the difference in the world. Our other one was like 12-15 years old - way past replacement date.

  10. Mami2jcn says

My mattress is lumpy. A new mattress would help me get comfortable and sleep through the night.

  11. Dominique says

I have a ton of sleep troubles due to my health and having just moved, we don’t even have a mattress right now!

  12. Kathy says

Oh, we need a new mattress desperately. Never get a pillowtop you can’t flip! We have twin valleys worn in the mattress with a hill between because all we can do is rotate it. But it IS past five years old now, so it’s time for a new one! (And a better night’s sleep!)

  13. Rachel says

I probably should’ve replaced my mattress when i got divorced, considering we got the mattress when we got married…and that was in 1993…no wonder i don’t sleep well on it..i just have to twist myself around all the lumps and bumps in it…lol

  14. Tabathia B says

I have to constantly switch sides because the mattress is so lumpy it has caused my hips and legs to start getting sore, so I purchase a topper to help but now it has gone flat. So therefore I toss and turn at night and a new mattress will help me get and stay comfortable enough to sleep through the night

  15. Kelly D says

My mattress isn’t as supportive in spots that I would like, so a new mattress would help me get a better night sleep because I wouldn’t toss and turn as much.

  16. Georgia Beckman says

My husband & I both have problems with our mattress. We wake up with horrible back pain. A new mattress, after being test driven, would be just what we need.

  17. Brandi says

I hate waking up with a stiff neck and aching shoulders. Our mattress is at least 10 years old; I can’t wait to get a new one!

  18. Jessie C. says

I sometimes have trouble sleeping due to back pain and our old mattress makes the problem worse. I could use some nice mattress.

  19. says

I have trouble sleeping too, I can’t remember the last time I LITERALLY slept thru an entire night. My back and legs are soo achy, I blame it on ‘old age’ as well (though I know I’m not old yet!)

  20. Amber Conaway says

I toss and turn all night long from back/hip aches, I’ve even tried the pillow between the legs and doesn’t help lol totally putting a fund together to save up for a new mattress! I think having a new and better mattress would support my body better!

  21. ROXANNE says

My husband & I have been married for 20 years. Shortly after getting married, we purchased a new mattress (the old one was fine - in my opinion - but you want to start a new marriage with a new mattress, right?). It didn’t work like that. We first purchased a Select Comfort. I think we both tried every setting & never found our setting. We would wake up sore & cranky. Next, we tried the top of the line mattress from Ethan Allen. I took a nap in the store on this one to try it out. I swear we didn’t get the same mattress as the one I tried out. Shortly after our investment (yes it was expensive), we noticed we were both sleeping in deep valleys. In order to turn over at night, I’d have to sit up to do so. If I wanted to kiss my husband goodnight, I’d have to roll up the hill from my side of the bed & then down again into his side. It was even more uncomfortable than the Select Comfort. Then my husband found a mattress at a hotel that he frequented on business trips. He noticed he always got a good night’s sleep. So we purchased it (way cheaper than our other 2 models), & it’s the best one yet. My husband swears by it. The point I’m making… I did a lot of research of mattresses & it took buying several mistakes before we got it right.

I have found the older I get the more trouble I have sleeping. My mattress is well over 8 years old and I have been trying to years to “patch” the problem by adding mattress pad, foam pads, etc. Although it provides temporary relief, the truth is I need a new mattress!

  23. Anna Pry says

i actually love my mattress and only sleep problem is my kids waking me up! but an organic mattress would be great because i wouldn’t have to worry about chemical off-gassing

I KNOW we need a new mattress! Ours is about 13 years old and my husband and I both often wake with aching backs. If you lay on my husband’s side of the bed, it feels like you are sinking into the middle of the bed, LOL!

  25. Victoria Parsons says

We so need a new mattress!!! This one is 10+ years old and has got to go! Our imprints are permanently embedded (pun intended) in it;)
Plus hubby snores and a new mattress would definitely help!!

  26. Jen Rodrigues says

Lets see I have had the same mattress for probably 20 years. Reason why is that my sister and i shared the same bedroom when I was younger and my bedroom was a guest room so it was never used until I was a teen but literally this mattress is that old. I need an upgrade badly. This bed makes a lot of noise when I toss and turn. It also hurts my back and I have a hard time sleeping. It’s not comfortable at all. Its a hard mattress. I would love a softer mattress with maybe a memory foam. I can’t afford one right now. I just started a new job and i am paying off my student loans. This would be a life savor to win a new mattress. Thanks for the chance.

I have fibromyalgia & myofascial pain syndrome from an accident a year ago, and my mattress is just not doing what it should for me anymore, I wake up unrested and toss and turn throughout the night. My doctor has said of course that it is important for me to have something that supports me but is comfortable so I am actually hunting for a mattress in the next month or two!

  28. jeannine s says

My mattress is lumpy. A new one would be great so I can get enough sleep to deal better with my day

  29. Amy Orvin says

My mattress is over 30 years old so that tells you right there. It’s hard and very uncomfortable.

  30. Elle says

I have scoliosis which causes a lot of back pain daily in my lower back as well as the middle/center where your spine is and also between my shoulders where your neck meets your back - it’s awful. This is why I rarely sleep on my back. I am always forced to sleep on my side or my stomach because my mattress is just not cushioned enough for my back - it’s painful and uncomfortable. I really do need a new mattress, one that is very soft and has a lot of cushion.

  31. Janice R. says

My mattress is pretty old – at least 10 years (closer to 15) and definitely leaves a lot to be desired. On one side I can actually feel the springs in my back so a new mattress would definitely aid with better sleep and overall better health.

  32. Leidy says

My mattress is a little bit old and not as cushioned as I would like it to be. Choosing a new mattress with the right cushion and support would definitely help me sleep better.

  33. Eve B. says

My mattress is very lumpy and uneven and not very comfortable. I get up usually at least once during the night and I think a newer, better mattress would result in an overall better sleep experience.

  34. Rosie says

The mattress I have is at least 70 years old! It is sagging and lumpy, it is hard to know where is a good spot for a good night’s sleep!

  35. Chavonne H says

I sleep well but my boyfriend is having severe insomnia and could benefit from a more comfortable mattress to fall and stay sleep.

  36. Robin Wilson says

My mattress is very old and quite hard with a dip in the middle despite regular flipping. Thanks to Lupus, Fibro, joint issues, etc. it is impossible for me to get comfy enough to go to sleep. I use a lot of pillows to try and prop myself, but I think a new foam or gel top mattress is the only answer to being able to get some sleep!

A new mattress would help back problems so I would feel rested in the morning. Thanks for the opportunity.

  38. Linda says

My husband gets up numerous times every night (and wakes me up often doing so) and constantly complains about needing a new mattress because it’s not cushioned enough and very uneven. Our mattress is easily over 15 years old and a new mattress would let him (and me) get a better sleep!

  39. janetfaye says

A new mattress would be a big help in letting be feel more comfortable when I go to sleep. I toss and turn a lot trying to get comfortable on my mattress.
