How To Get Your Kids Involved In Holiday Volunteering

As the holidays near, it is time to start thinking about what you can do to teach your kids more about giving back.  The focus of the holidays has become more centered on material things and gifts as the years go by.  This year work on How To Get Your Kids Involved In Holiday Volunteering.  Not only will they learn valuable life lessons, they will be helping people who truly need it in your community.

HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS INVOLVED IN HOLIDAY VOLUNTEERING

Locate The Local Angel Tree:  Many communities participate in what they call the Angel Tree.  This program is typically organized by The Salvation Army. You choose an “angel” name from the tree to buy gifts for.  These are typically kids and teens from low income families in the community who may not receive gifts otherwise.  This is a great way for your kids to go shopping for someone their age.  It helps them realize not everyone gets what they want each year, and teaches the value of money.

Visit Local Nursing Homes Or Retirement Centers:  This one can be so important.  Not only are there a ton of lonely men and women who would love a visitor, there are great lessons for your child to learn.  Contact the local facilities and ask about areas you can volunteer.  Perhaps coming for visits, bringing dogs or cats for visits or simply being there to handout presents at holiday parties are ways your family can help bring love to a lonely individual.

Skip The Family Meal & Serve The Homeless:  Check with area soup kitchens and shelters and rather than cooking a large meal for your family, donate the groceries and then volunteer to serve.  Doing so as a family will help your children see the importance of giving back.  It will also show them how many of their own peers are in low income situations, or perhaps even without a home to live in.

The holidays can so easily become commercialized.  Whether your family ends to go overboard with gifts, or your kids have lost the understanding and compassion for their fellow man you want them to have – this year you can change that.  Get your kids involved in holiday volunteering this year.  Make a difference not only in your family, but in the life of another family in your community.
