Once a month in our frugal living journey we will bring you a great receipt or suggestion for a homemade product that will help you save money. This week we are going to share a basic Homemade Laundry Detergent recipe that will save you money while also giving you a natural product that is better for your family. This recipe is a great option for you to make in bulk and share with others who are interested in natural household cleansers.
Supplies Needed:
- 2 Parts Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (available in most stores near laundry products)
- 2 Parts 20 Mule Team Borax (available in most stores near laundry products)
- 1 Part Grated Dr. Bonner’s Bar Soap (Ivory or other unscented or natural bar soap may be used instead)
Directions:
- In your food processor or with a hand grater, grate one bar soap until finely ground.
- In large bowl or tub, mix together 2 parts washing soda, 2 parts borax and 1 part bar soap.
- Mix in 10-15 drops of favorite essential oil scent if desired
- Use 1/8-1/4 cup dry homemade laundry detergent per load of laundry
This simple homemade laundry detergent recipe is easy to create and low cost. You can make in small batches as listed above, or make in a large batch and store in a simple 5 gallon bucket that has a lid to seal. The powdered detergent works great for cleaning your laundry, but without essential oils added won’t have a bright scent you may be used to. Lavender, Almond, Peppermint or Lemon are all great options for adding to your laundry detergent, or directly to the load of laundry to create a pleasant smell.
Making homemade laundry detergent and other homemade household products is not only Eco-friendly, it is budget friendly and one of the most popular frugal living tips you will find. For $5-$10 you can create enough homemade powdered laundry detergent to last for up to 6 months.
