As part of a healthy lifestyle one of your goals should be finding easy ways to move more. Sometimes it can be very intimidating to think of new ways to move more when you are just beginning to the weight loss journey. Often times simple little things can add up and you will add more activity as time progresses. Once you begin to lose the weight you will find yourself with more energy and moving more will become more natural.
Easy Ways To Move More:
- Park farther away from the doors. There are two added benefits to this, first you will get more steps to the store and back out to the car, but also you won’t be fighting other cars for the closest spot to the door. Once you get in the habit of parking farther awayt from the door parking is less stressful when you aren’t trying to nab that first row parking spot.
- When you need to use a restroom, again pick the one that adds a few extra steps to your trip. Whether it’s at home, on errands or in the office you can make a couple trips of extra steps. Even better yet, make a conscious decision to get up and move at least every hour.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator. You will not only get those added extra steps but making your body do the stairs will help your body gain some muscle and stamina. The steps are more of a physical workout and much better for your health then just walking.
- Do household chores the long way. Sometimes as a parent finding time to fit in exercise can seem impossible. Instead of taking out the trash and recycling at the same time do the task in two separate trips. The extra steps will add up fast. If you make yourself walk fast your will increase your heart rate. For laundry make multiple trips to collect loads and to put them away as well. Simple ways to add more steps, will pay off at the end of the day.
- Listen to music that moves you!!! I love having some good jams playing while doing chores. I find myself working faster or moving more than I would without the songs. Also, belting out song lyrics while cleaning burns calories as well! Sing it sister!
- Always have comfy shoes and clothing with you! You never know when you are able to get in some extra steps. This past Christmas I arrived early to the company Christmas party and managed to walk two miles because I had tennis shoes with me in the car. This is super handy as a mom during sports practices, waiting for kids at school, being early for an appointment, etc. Take advantage of those extra minutes to get your body to move more.
Be sure to find a way to record your activity to motivate yourself. You can look into an activity tracker like a pedometer, a workout tracker app on your smartphone, a fit bit, or other monitor. Also finding a way to visually see your workouts on a calendar on your wall or fridge can help you to stay motivated.
