How to Get the Most Out of Your New Fitbit
How to Get the Most Out of Your New Fitbit
A new Fitbit like most fitness trackers can be a little overwhelming at first. They do so many things and can be so complex that often new users end up only seeing the benefits they could get from a pedometer. Don’t be someone who spends $200 on a pedometer! Get the most out of your new Fitbit by using these handy tips and tricks! Some of these features can really help change the way you look at health and wellness, not just your fitness and weight loss statistics!
There are a lot of different FitBit models to choose from. Take a look at each model and find the one that is right for you.
Fitbit and most other fitness trackers, works by calibrating movement and then transferring that information into charts, graphs, and other readable mediums. Don’t get a false reading or bad data because of a device that is not properly calibrated. Make sure you tell your Fitbit (in the app or online) where you are wearing your device. Even switching hands can make a big difference; you will move your dominate hand more frequently for gesturing, writing, etc. Fitbit can calibrate your device so that these factors are taken into consideration with just a few clicks!
I have a few extra bands to go with my Fitbit, so I can match it to outfits I wear. I usually take it off for cleaning and that’s about it. I sleep with it on to track my night, too.

Update Your Personal Info
Your new Fitbit is only going to be as accurate as the information it has about you. Provide the most accurate information manually by going into your personal information in the app and updating the automatically entered data! If the app estimates your height or stride just a few inches off that can really change the accuracy of your daily results! Also, use this time to update your goals by entering your desired steps, calories, weight, etc. You can get the most out of your new Fitbit by simply making sure it has up to date and correct information to use for calculations!
Use the Built in Alarm Feature
This is perhaps my favorite of the list! The built in alarm feature on some Fitbit units is amazing. You can ignore your phone, you can ignore your notes, but when something you are wearing starts shaking itself around like a crazy hot potato you are going to notice! Set up the alarms on your Fitbit. Allow it to alert you when it’s time to move, drink some water, get to the gym, etc. It will help you reach your goals if you set up all of its many features! The in app alarms can also help you remember daily reminders, the app will happily let you know when you have reached or are near to reaching your daily goals as well!
This is the FitBit Alta I wear, in plum. It keeps me on track to get at least 10,000 steps a day. I also use it to track my weight and water intake. Amazon has them at a great price. Buy yours today.
Manually Add Data You Forgot to Track
Part of how the Fitbit works to help you is by gathering information about your day. If you forget to log your sleep by turning on “sleep mode” don’t freak out! Simply manually log that information when you wake up so that it can be added in to your daily, weekly, and overall totals! Another good idea is to go through your stream each night and make sure that you give detailed information for any workouts, high movement periods, or times when your Fitbit thinks you were napping. If you make it a priority to update these things manually you will get the most accurate data that your Fitbit can provide!
You can find old and new friends through the challenges portion of the APP. Join challenges to motivate you to get those steps in. A little bit of competition is always a fun way to use your new FitBit to move more.
