Even when it’s not cold outside my son and husband drink plenty of hot chocolate. Every time I’d pick up a canister or box of hot chocolate mix, I’d tell myself, you need to make your own.

Making your own instant hot chocolate mix is easy and a lot less expensive than the prepackaged versions. Not to mention, when you control the ingredients, it’s easier to make a mix that meets your family’s needs.

Recipe Ingredients

Unsweetened cocoa, powdered milk, and confectioner’s sugar is all you need to make this sweet treat. Other recipes recommend a bit of salt, but I don’t think that is necessary and skip that ingredient. You can also use granulated sugar in place of the confectioner’s sugar, but it doesn’t dissolve as smoothly when you prepare the hot chocolate.

Storage Tips

This is an easy recipe and you can have a large quantity of hot chocolate mix ready to serve in less than five minutes.

I usually make a triple batch of this recipe, store it in a large airtight container, and transfer it to a mason jar for easy access. Keep a tablespoon sized scoop right in the jar and you’re ready to prepare a nice cup of hot chocolate. Refill the mason jar as needed.

Flavor Ideas

Feel free to add marshmallows or whipped topping to your prepared cup of hot chocolate. My husband uses hot chocolate mix and adds it to his coffee to drink hot or cold. It gives the coffee a rich mocha flavor and even this non-coffee drinker enjoys the taste.

  1. What is 10x sugar? Surely not 10 times the other amounts? I’m an avid Baker (57 years) and have never heard this. I did see you mentioned that regular sugar could be used, so are you meaning icing or confectioners sugar? Maybe 10x is a USA term?

    1. Yes, 10X sugar is a common name for powdered or confectioners sugar. I’m not sure if it’s the entire USA or not but it’s what my grandmother, mother, and aunts have always called powdered sugar!

    2. @Meagen Brosius, It’s simply the name that was used for that type of sugar back in the olden days and refers to the number of times it’s processed to get the sugar crystals so fine (I just looked it up to explain to someone else).

  2. Is there a sugar free version of this recipe? I’m diabetic and can’t eat powdered sugar. Thanks.

    1. @Donna Ruble, You could use sucralose (brand name: Splenda) because it’s measured the same as sugar. I’m sure there are other sugar substitutes that work just as well, but Splenda is what I used most often when I was low-carbing to lose weight.

  3. Sorry, I meant to say replace 1/2 cup of the powdered milk with 1/2 cup of powdered coffee creamer and add 1/4 cup of Malted Milk Powder. Oops.

  4. For richer hot chocolate replace of the powdered milk with 1/2 cup of powdered coffee creamer and add 1/4 cup of Malted Milk Powder. Yum

    1. Mom always added a large box of instant vanilla pudding mix, and cut back the sugar. Soooo super creamy!!

  5. Never hear of of 10x sugar. Is this an amarican term for sugar? I do a lot of baking and never heard of this?
Might want to make it more reader friendly.
Also grate some dark chocolate into this mixture, gives it a silkier texture.
I also make a more adult version with instant espresso added. You can also add minced candy canes into the mixture for peppermint hot chocolate. Good way to use up broken candy canes. ♥️

    1. @Norma, There are probably half a dozen other ways of referring to it. My oldest cookbooks refer to it as 10X sugar, my newer ones refer to it as confectioner’s sugar or powdered sugar, and my recipes that originate in the UK call it icing sugar. 10X actually is most descriptive since it refers to the number of times it is milled to get that size of sugar crystal.

  6. Always good to have a hot cocoa recipe ready for winter! My kids love a hot cup of cocoa after playing in the snow. Thanks for sharing at the Wednesday Showcase party!

  7. This looks easy enough. I haven’t made hot chocolate mix since my kids were young. But now that I have grandchildren I have thought about revisiting it. thanks for the simple recipe.
